Turning pain into purpose

Why this work is personal.

“Recovery is not a journey anyone should have to walk alone.”

Duarte Recovery Housing was born from personal experience, deep loss and a promise to make a difference.

For Sierra, addiction has touched nearly every role she has held—wife, daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin, and friend. In each of those relationships, she experienced addiction from the sober side: loving someone, worrying about them, trying to help them, and living with the fear, instability, and heartbreak that addiction brings to an entire family. She also had to learn one of the hardest lessons for anyone who loves someone struggling with addiction—the difference between loving and supporting someone and enabling the behaviors that keep them trapped.

In 2017, Sierra lost her brother, Jake Calico, to an overdose. In the middle of that loss, she made a promise that one day she would do something in his honor to help others struggling with addiction.

Zac understands addiction from both sides. He is the son, brother, and friend of people who have battled addiction, and he is also in recovery himself. The trauma and instability of his childhood followed him into adulthood, contributing to patterns that took years to recognize and address. He understands the loneliness of addiction and the shame that can follow a relapse—the feeling that you have disappointed everyone around you and may be beyond redemption. But he also knows that redemption is possible, and he is walking proof of that.

When Sierra and Zac began their relationship, Zac was new to recovery. He later relapsed, returned to treatment, earned his CDCA, and began working in the treatment and recovery field. Although he spent years helping others, his own journey was not finished. Another relapse in 2021 began a difficult period marked by setbacks, hard truths, and the ongoing work of recovery and rebuilding.

Their path forward was not simple. Together, they confronted addiction, mental health, childhood trauma, unhealthy cycles, and the damage caused by repeatedly broken trust. Through counseling, accountability, difficult conversations, and a commitment to continued growth, they worked to rebuild their lives and their relationship—more than once.

Duarte Recovery Housing is their way of turning that pain into purpose.

Their goal is not simply to provide men with a bed and a place to stay. They want to create safe, structured, and accountable homes where men in recovery are genuinely known, supported, and challenged to build better lives. They also hope to mentor and encourage the spouses and families walking beside them, because lasting recovery requires healing beyond the individual.

This mission is deeply personal. Sierra and Zac know what relapse, grief, trauma, fear, and rebuilding look like because they have lived them. They also know that change is possible when people are surrounded by honesty, accountability, compassion, and a community that refuses to give up on them.

Through Duarte Recovery Housing, they hope to help men restore their lives, help families begin healing, and break the generational cycles that have affected both of their families. Most importantly, they want to show their two children, Zeke and Kyler, that pain does not have to be wasted—it can become the foundation for something that changes lives.
